Many of us are superheroes without capes. We are often there for our family, friends and co-workers, always ready to help, ready to support and rescue them in their time of need.
Equally as often, however, we neglect ourselves and become rundown, stressed out, and even ill as a result of our commitment to those we love.
A part of being there for others is ensuring we set a time for self-care. In the way you are encouraged to put on your own oxygen mask during an emergency in an aeroplane before assisting others, self-care guarantees that you have the energy and wherewithal to help those who need it.
Here are a few wellness tips you can use to make sure your oxygen mask is securely fastened before you go off to save the day.
Spend time outside
Take a walk and take a few moments to commune with nature. Whether it’s on a beach or in a park, the time you spend outside will lift your mood and help you put everything in perspective. It’s also a great opportunity to soak up some of that great vitamin D producing rays of sunshine.
Eat mood-boosting food
The chemicals in the food and drink we consume can affect our mental and physical wellbeing. Alcohol, for example, is a depressant while the omega-3 fatty acids found in food like salmon can help fight off the blues.
Try something new
Take time to try or learn something new. A change of pace goes a long way in helping us dig ourselves out of a rut. Variety is the spice of life after all.
Get up from your desk
If your job requires you to remain sedentary for an extended period, take the opportunity to get up and pace the floor a bit. No matter how minuscule, the exercise will promote the release of mood-enhancing endorphins. The change of scenery will also help the flow of blood to the brain which helps with concentration.
Another way to enhance your wellbeing is to take up a regular exercise routine. Join one of the classes we have here at The Pilates Room. Speak to a member of our team today by calling us or visit the contact page on our website if you have any questions.
