People often think that because pilates isn’t a high intensity, aerobic exercise that it doesn’t offer any benefits to your weight, but this isn’t true. Pilates is beneficial to weight loss and below we explore why.
1. It burns calories
Pilates helps you burn calories, but not as many as an indoor cycling class or vigorous run. In a 50 minutes pilates class, a 150-pound woman can expect to burn between 210 and 360 calories. Exactly how many will depend on the intensity of the class – advanced practitioners are usually performing moves that require more energy and muscular work, so they burn more calories.
Therefore, to use pilates for a really noticeable and more expedited weight loss plan, combine it with some cardio activity four to five times per week, alongside a healthy diet.
2. Creates lean muscles
Burning calories is, of course, an essential part of the weight-loss equation, but it’s not the only thing. You need to build lean muscle to help rev your metabolism and burn more calories all day long. This means you will be burning calories whether you’re performing in class, or simply sitting at the computer. Pilates can help you create this lean muscle, especially in your core.
Exercises such as roll-ups, teasers, the ab series, leg circles, and just about every other move work the muscles from your shoulders to your hips. Combining your pilates routine with a few full body weight training routines will encourage and accelerate the growth of lean muscle.
It’s important to remember that pilates alone won’t help you lose lots of weight. If you undertake pilates exercises but continue to eat junk food, then the chances of seeing significant weight loss will be slim. It’s great when used in combination with other forms of exercise and of course a healthy diet.
