What Do I Need to Bring?
Pilates is an exercise form that doesn’t require too much fuss. Thankfully there are only a few things you will need for a pilates class.
Pilates studios typically provide equipment that you need for the workout. This means you won’t need to bring much with you. The exception to this may be a mat since lots of people like to work out on their own, or some people just prefer using their own mat. Pilates mats are different to other standard mats. They are made a little thicker than a yoga mat, to help provide more padding and cushioning. It’s a good idea to check with your instructor for a mat recommendation.
It’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water to your class, as it’s important to stay hydrated before and throughout your session. Don’t forget to bring a hand towel too – you will sweat!
What should I wear?
You should keep your pilates attire simple. Below are some suggestions on what to wear and not wear during a pilates class.
- Skip shoes: Typically no shoes are worn, but grip socks are preferred for health and safety reasons.
- Avoid baggy clothes: Choose workout clothing that’s stretchy but not baggy. This way, your instructor can see the alignment of your bones and how your muscles are engaging.
- Remove embellishments: Remove buckles, zippers, buttons, clasps, or other trimmings that can severely damage pilates equipment and feel uncomfortable during poses.
- Manage your mane: Your hair should be kept out of your face, and tied back if it’s long.
Apart from that, bring a smile and positive attitude and you’re ready to go!
